Plants

Plants lady beetles use

Adults need two tables: prey and flowers. EENY-592 says convergent beetles take pollen and nectar when prey is scarce. In a Central Florida yard that means dill, fennel, cilantro, sweet alyssum, cosmos, and pentas beside the tomatoes and citrus flush where aphids actually land.

Umbels

Dill, fennel, and cilantro hold tiny flowers in a flat head a beetle can walk. They also bolt fast in Florida heat — sow more than once, and let a few plants flower instead of harvesting every leaf.

Small flowers

Sweet alyssum, cosmos, pentas, and zinnias keep bloom in the hot months if they are watered. Pentas and zinnias are Florida-yard standards on Gardening Solutions lists. Deadhead zinnias; let alyssum carpet a bed edge.

Crops that carry prey

Aphids find citrus flush, tender rose, milkweed, peppers, and kale. The hunter follows the prey. A crate-label tomato patch with dill in the row is a better beetle yard than a sealed greenhouse.

Questions

Do ladybug houses work?

Most empty boxes stay empty. Beetles overwinter in cracks and leaf litter, not in a purchased hotel. Harmonia uses wall voids. Habitat is plants, not plywood.
